Defending champion Jeremiah Azu narrowly missed out on a medal in the men's 60m final at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Poland.
Twelve months after winning his first global title by claiming world indoor gold in China, Azu fell short of the podium by just 0.01 seconds, finishing with a time of 6.46 seconds in Torun.
The 24-year-old faced strong competition while defending his title but demonstrated his medal potential by setting a personal best of 6.45 seconds in the semi-finals—moving him to second on the British all-time list behind Dwain Chambers.
American Jordan Anthony, the fastest man entering the championships this year, improved his time to 6.41 seconds to take the gold ahead of Jamaica's Olympic and world 100m silver medallist Kishane Thompson.
Thompson and American Trayvon Bromell both finished in 6.45 seconds, securing the silver and bronze medals respectively, as Azu was narrowly denied in a thrilling conclusion to the opening day of competition.
Earlier on Friday, Olympic champion and indoor world record holder Keely Hodgkinson controlled her women's 800m heat from start to finish, winning in 2:00.32 and advancing to the semi-finals, where she will be joined by teammate Isabelle Boffey.
World bronze medallist Ben Pattison (1:47.48) also advanced in the men's 800m event, which will take place on Saturday morning.
